WNY Softball Suffers Another Great Loss

More terribly sad news to report to you.

Legendary Williamsville South High School softball coach Gerry Gentner passed away this morning after a long battle with cancer. He fought this battle with a lot of dignity and courage; at one point coaching his beloved team with a chemo drip attached to his body. He put his girls first.

Coach Gentner built a powerhouse at South, winning New York State championships and mentoring great players such as Michelle Fridey, Chelsea Plimpton, All-American and Olympian Caitlin Lever, current Griff Lauren Falzone, and many others. I know he was well loved by his players.

Our condolences and prayers go out to Mr. Gentner's family during this most difficult time.

Kalie Michalski To Join The Griffs?

2011 Lake Shore High School graduate Kalie Michalski has apparently joined the Golden Griffins in time for the upcoming 2012 softball season, this according to the Lake Shore High School website. Kalie is an All-ECIC 2 First Teamer who plays a multitude of positions, including third base and catcher.

That rumor seems to be confirmed. The second part of the rumor is that someone has left the team, and that is unconfirmed...

2012 Golden Griffins In The Circle

With the season only three weeks away, and the team busy at practice, it's time for this fan's preview of the 2012 Golden Griffins to begin.

Once again this season, with Iona very strong in the circle with two seniors, the Griffs' chances will primarily depend upon the performance of the pitching staff. The team will have a senior in the circle for the first time since 2009; and they will have four pitchers for the first time since 2007. It's no secret that outside of Jen Consaul's encouraging freshman season performance the staff struggled last season. But there's reason for hope in '12.

Senior Caroline Main is the key to this season, I think, and the Griffs will ride her arm as far as it takes them. Caroline, as you know, was injured at the end of the 2010 season, and never seemed to fully recover until the final week or two of 2011. I think she was injured again last year, but you know how secret they are about these things. At any rate, she didn't look injured to me at all this past fall. She performed like the 2010 All-MAAC Caroline; and that's what the Griffs will be looking for from her. You'll remember that season she was undefeated in MAAC play. This is her year, and this is her team. I think she's ready and eager to pitch; if she returns to form, the Griffs will be a contender.

After an All-MAAC freshman season, junior Amanda Baun did have a sophomore slump. Amanda is vitally important to this team. She proved what she can do in '10 when she set a Canisius freshman record for wins. She can be a dominant strike out pitcher. I think Amanda needs plenty of innings in the early portion of the season to give her that chance to succeed once more. This past fall, she seemed to me to be working on mixing up her pitches more.

Sophomore Jen Consaul was pressed into action once conference play began last season. She responded admirably under a lot of pressure. What I noticed most about her is that she doesn't get rattled, no matter the situation. I thought her best performance was at Siena, in game two of a MAAC doubleheader after the Griffs had been run ruled in game one. She totally shut down the Saints, who were smelling blood, and kept Canisius in the race at the time. So, Jen Consaul pitching more than probably coach Rappl had planned turned into a blessing in disguise---she ended up as one of the MAAC's top pitchers in conference play, with a 5-1 record and 2.05 ERA. this is significant considering she didn't pitch all that much in pre-conference play, and was just adjusting to college softball. Jen will compete for starting time.

The Griffs have a freshman, Corinne Schaus on the roster this season. Corinne did not pitch much at all in the fall, so I suspect she will be eased into the lineup with some relief innings in the early part of the season. But as last year proved, you never know what will happen.

The 2012 Golden Griffins must have the goal of returning to the MAAC Tournament. The performance of their pitchers will determine if this is to be.

WNY Softball Loses A Great Friend

Very sad news to report.

John Tripi, a great friend to and a leader of Western New York softball, has passed away today.

Mr. Tripi was the commissioner of the Amherst Girls Softball League, and was a leader of the great Amherst Lightning organization. As you can see from the photo below, he made an impact on a lot of young women who went on to play softball at Canisius College.

We offer our sympathy and prayers to John Tripi's family during this difficult time.

*There will be a tribute to John Tripi at the Sports Performance Park at Eastern Hills Mall on Tuesday, January 10th starting at 5 p.m. All are welcome.

ALEXIS ROMAN COMMITS TO CANISIUS

Alexis Roman of Chino, CA has committed to play softball for Canisius College beginning in the 2013 season.

The newest Golden Griffin is another recruit to come from a top ranked California High School softball program. Alexis Roman is a second baseman/shortstop at Don Lugo High School in Chino. She is a three time All-Mt. Baldy League selection, and helped the Conquistadores to a league championship in '11. Alexis plays travel ball currently with Pure Fastpitch; she has also played with the Lakewood Firecrackers and the So Cal Wicked. Presumably she will be signing her NLI in the spring.

Around The Corner...

I've been out of town for the holidays, and I hope everyone reading this is having a great holiday season with their families.

The players are all back home at the moment, but will soon begin the 2012 season in earnest. First pitch is only six weeks away, if you can believe that. So far we've had a very mild winter; maybe that's a sign of better softball weather than we got a year ago. Soon after the new year, I will begin previewing (from a fan's perspective as usual) the new season. My prediction last year was totally off, as a reader so kindly reminded me soon afterward. But you will recall Coach Rappl talking of Super Regionals, so I was in good company. The Golden Griffins must always set the bar high; they have too proud of a tradition. Failing to qualify for the MAAC tournament last season was not acceptable; that must be their dedicated goal upon returning to campus.

Pictured is former Griff Jess Martin. Jess saw her single season homer record fall to Paige Freiberger in 2010, and now another of her records is in peril. Senior Katie Lancellotti is just four home runs short of tying her career record. And watching Katie play this past fall, I say she has a great chance of becoming the all-time home run queen. There is another player to watch for however. Junior Stephanie Pfentner is only 12 away from the record. So we could be talking about this again next year. Or maybe even this season...

Tori Nappo Signs National Letter Of Intent

Victoria Nappo of Clarence, NY recently made her commitment official by signing a National Letter Of Intent, and will join the Golden Griffins next fall.

As you probably know, I have been hoping Tori would sign with the Griffs for the last couple years. The second team High School All-American will be Lizzy Gatto's heir apparent in center field, where I suspect she will be a four year starter. In my eyes, she's the best outfielder produced in Western New York in a long time---she has all the tools. Speed, a great arm, good range, an eye for the ball plus she's very intelligent, not to mention athletic. Tori also plays soccer and basketball at Clarence High, and does so very well. At the plate, Tori is a dynamic hitter. Able to hit for high average, she also will be bringing a lot of power to the Canisius lineup.

Of course you know she will be joining sister Val at Canisius; the two will make a formidable combination for the Griffs.

Bonnies Sign Five Players

St. Bonaventure softball coach Mike Threehouse has announced the signing of five new players to his softball program.

Emily McDonough is an infielder from Marlboro, NY and a player who has the potential to be a star in the Atlantic 10. Emily plays for Marlboro High School, where she achieved Class "A" All-New York State status with some remarkable statistics, including a .735 batting average and 48 stolen bases in 22 games.

Carly Bilchak of New Paltz, NY is an accomplished pitcher and hitter with Highland High School and the Ulster Fillies travel team. A hard thrower, Carly consistently posts ERAs of under 2.00, and many strikeouts.

Katie Sinclair of Cortland, NY is a first baseman/catcher for Homer High School. A multi-sport athlete, Katie is a powerful hitter, and led her team in hitting (.561) and extra base hits in '11.

Alexis Sloat is a pitcher from Shinglehouse, PA. She attends Bolivar-Richburg High School right across the border in New York. Alexis has a career record of 40-8 with the Wolverines, including a 19-4 record in '11, a season in which she struck out 166 batters while walking only 31 and finishing with an ERA of 1.88.

Emily Belfield of Lockport, NY is a center fielder for the Lady Lions and an All-Western New York Honorable Mention selection. A productive hitter, Emily broke the Lockport RBI record last season.

Banning softball player Brenda Santana overcame some major academic hurdles and garnered a hard-earned scholarship to Canisius. Santana has major hitting potential, but had been ineligible last season. Santana is eligible now and earned a Division I scholarship after hitting the books in a big way.

"She worked her (butt) off," Banning co-coach Rudy Aguirre said. "She took night classes to make up for her work, and her mom was a big part of that, staying on her and making sure she took care of business."

In other recruiting news, the rumor mill speaks of a California (by way of Washington) pitcher possibly headed to Canisius...

Efficient Lizzy Gatto

I want to share with you something that I stumbled across that I believe no one is aware of. I certainly wasn't.

Lizzy Gatto enters her senior season with a stolen base percentage of .957. She has been successful on 45 of 47 stolen base attempts, twice having perfect seasons including 2011 when she was one of only three players in the nation to be perfect in over 20 attempts.

Here's where it gets interesting. To qualify for the NCAA career record for stolen base percentage, a player must attempt at least 50 steals; Lizzy is three attempts away, and will certainly qualify. The national record will never be broken, held by Northern Illinois' Jen Dean who was 64-64 in her career. However, if Lizzy Gatto is successful in her first three stolen base attempts, she will move into second place all-time in the nation. Another perfect season would keep her in 2nd place; a few failed attempts would give her a solid shot at the top five.

Playing alongside all-time Canisius and MAAC base stealer Lauren Hope has apparently caused Lizzy's great base path skills to be somewhat overshadowed. But the fact is plain that she has been an outstanding base stealer during her college career. We will follow this story during the upcoming season.

Brenda Santana of Los Angeles, CA has signed a National Letter Of Intent to play softball at Canisius College beginning with the 2013 season.

A very interesting signing for the Golden Griffins, as Coach Rappl brings in a heavy hitter from the west coast. Brenda Santana is a first baseman/third baseman for Banning High School in Los Angeles. She has been a "cleanup" hitter for the Pilots, a team that made it through to the CIF City Section Final in 2009. Brenda has been a first team All-City Section selection. Her numbers from last season are quite impressive---a .455 batting average to go along with a huge .909 slugging percentage. Her on base percentage was great too (.558) and she averaged over one RBI per game. She's outstanding in the field also, only committing one error in '11.

Bethany DeMarco Signs National Letter Of Intent

Why Canisius she was asked.

“It was kind of funny,” she replied. “They were actually the first school that sent me a letter saying that they were interested in me my freshman year. And then it was one of the first schools that I ever visited. We (Victor) had a tournament and coach (Mike) Rappl called the next day and said they were interested and wanted me to come down. I met with coach Rappl and everybody and they were really nice. It was just that when I first got there I sort of knew it was what I wanted. The atmosphere, it has like a small school atmosphere, is what I really wanted.”

National Letter Of Intent Week

Tori Nappo joins her sister Val next fall at Canisius College

This Wednesday November 9 marks the beginning of the early National Letter Of Intent signing period for division 1 softball. Schools will be permitted to sign players through November 16. Presumably Tori Nappo, Meghan Cuda and Bethany DeMarco will be signing on the dotted line later this week as they finalize their commitments to Canisius, but the Griffs have at least two more players to go. Who are they? There is one I am aware of who is considering joining the Griffs, but I don't know as of now if she is committed. The 5th? It's a mystery to me at the moment. Maybe we'll find out in a couple days, maybe in a couple months.

55 Game Schedule In 2012

Griffs will play under a roof in 2012!

Canisius College released their official 2012 softball schedule today, which includes a doubleheader at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Looks like Coach Rappl is determined not to have a repeat of the 2011 season, which saw his team play a truncated 41 game schedule due to many cancellations. He has scheduled 55 games for 2012, which may be the most ever for a Canisius regular season. It's an interesting and challenging slate.

After opening at the Pirate Classic with a couple of games against host East Carolina and one against Virginia, Canisius will be in Virginia for a pair of doubleheaders at Hampton and Norfolk State. The first weekend of March will find them again in Baltimore for the UMBC Invitational, where they will play James Madison, Coppin State, Princeton and the host school. Two appearances at the South Florida series of tournaments come next, with weekday doubleheaders at Florida Gulf Coast and at South Florida against the Bulls and the Dutch National Team in between. The Dutch have been training in the USA the last four springs, so that will be an interesting exhibition. At the USF tournaments, they will play Maryland, Long Island and Cleveland State among others.

The Griffs will return north with an interesting doubleheader on Saturday March 24 when they take part in the Duel At The Dome at Syracuse's Carrier Dome. Playing against the Orange and Colgate, I believe this may be the first time Canisius will play an indoor game. At least we know for certain it won't be rained out! March 28 will be their first local appearance, with a single game at Buffalo. The Griffs will open their home schedule on April 3 when they host Detroit Mercy for a doubleheader. Mount St. Mary's will be in town two days later on the 5th.

Canisius will open MAAC play on Saturday April 7 with a doubleheader against Siena at the Demske. Road trips to Robert Morris and St. Bonaventure will highlight April. The regular season closes with a MAAC clash at home against Rider. The Griffs will have 7 home dates in 2012, and will play at local rival Niagara on May 2.

The new season begins in a little over three months; the Griffs will have a busy spring!

Fall Ball '11 Wrap Up

I was mostly impressed with the newest edition of the Golden Griffins softball team as they began their journey to the 2012 season. I thought the team had a very productive fall season in preparation for what will be a difficult challenge beginning in a few months. Like it or not, the expectation for the Canisius softball program is to win MAAC titles, which is why they've been so successful. They will be in for a good fight in '12, but I believe they have the tools to accomplish the goal.

The fortunes of the Golden Griffins this season will rest largely on the arm of senior pitcher Caroline Main. Caroline has battled back from injury, and she looked to me to be in 2010 form. You'll remember she was unbeaten that season in conference play as the Griffs won the regular season title. She was mostly dominant this fall during her time in the circle, striking out many, including 11 Bonnies. And I'm sure she's eager to make her final season a memorable one.

The Griffs will have more pitching depth this season than they have had probably since 2008. I continue to be very impressed with the play of sophomore Jen Consaul, and I get the feeling that Coach Rappl has a growing confidence in her ability. Jen came to Canisius with the reputation of being a hard worker, and it shows in her play. She's a very intense but even keeled pitcher. She doesn't get down on herself when opponents hit her, but seems to learn from the experience. She's already shown she can be counted upon, and this fall has added another aspect to her game---offense. She hit the ball very hard in September. She can play first base, designated player, or simply hit when she is pitching. So she is going to contribute one way or the other.

The Griffs will be hard pressed to win a championship without junior Amanda Baun being involved in a major way. She struggled during the second half of her sophomore season, and Canisius needs her to return to the All-MAAC form she displayed in 2010. It looked to me as if she was working hard on her game this fall; it seemed like she was mixing her pitches more effectively. IMO, it's Coach Rappl's number one priority to work her back into the elite pitcher she truly is. If that happens, the Griffs would be three deep in the circle and very difficult to beat. I believe Amanda will have a big season in 2012.

The biggest eye opener of the fall season was the outstanding play of freshman Robin Kennery. The Griffs had a big question mark over third base with the departure of Paige Freiberger, but that seems to have vanished with the performance put on by Robin. For a freshman, she seemed to have an awful lot of confidence going for her; maybe poise is a better word. I'll be honest and state that I thought she would be eased into the lineup, but it doesn't look like that's going to occur. She hit pretty much everything that was thrown her way, showing a lot of power too. In the field she is calm and intelligent.

I wrote a lot about senior shortstop Katie Lancellotti, and for good reason. She dazzled in the field, making great play after great play. I thought she should have been All-MAAC last season for defensive reasons alone. I would like to see her hit around .300 this season; she hit very well in the fall, and by the way, ran the bases better than I have ever seen her do. Katie will be chasing the all-time Canisius home run record in 2012.

Coach Rappl played consistently what appears to be his starting lineup for this season, with the exception of second baseman Katie Medina who was recovering from knee surgery. Although she played some outfield, sophomore Val Nappo settled in at first base. She is outstanding defensively at the position, and again hit the ball hard this fall. You might not know it, but last season Val was amongst the MAAC leaders in conference games , with a .359 average in MAAC play. You also may not know that second baseman Lauryn Chris was number one in the MAAC in conference games with a .455 average. That's why I keep saying she must play in 2012. She was outstanding at second base this fall, playing all the games due to Katie's injury and showing great range and of course lots of smarts. Katie is the starting second baseman, and hopefully she will be fully recovered come February, but Lauryn has to have a place in the lineup somewhere. Need those seniors in the lineup.

The Griffs' outfield looks very solid, especially with the surge in freshman Michelle DelPrince's play. Michelle will replace the departed Lauren Hope, and brings almost as much speed. Her play got better as the fall progressed, and she showed herself to be a real "heads up" player. She will be in left field. Senior Lizzy Gatto of course will be in center where she has been from day one. Enjoy her one more season; she is one of the best all around players to ever wear a Canisius uniform. She made fall ball look easy this this year, and she can do it all---hitting, fielding, throwing, stealing, etc. But this season she will be called upon to be a leader, and the Griffs need that most of all from her. The truth is, Canisius missed Michelle Fridey terribly last season, more than I anticipated. Lizzy will have to fill that gap. I believe that Lauren Falzone is going to have an All-MAAC season in 2012. She is the new leadoff hitter, replacing Lauren Hope, and she stepped very comfortably into that role this fall. She got on a hot hitting streak from the very beginning of last season, and has not cooled off since. Her flirtation with .400 was not a fluke. She is showing all around skill; a great bunter and runner who has always been very solid in right field. She mostly hit at the bottom of the order last season; now she will be asked to do more. If fall ball is any indication, she will have no problem with that. Junior Chloe Contreras saw a lot of time in the outfield this fall (although she wasn't dressed for the final game), and we should see her getting some starts this season. And of course, she has been a very capable pinch runner during her career.

Last season, the Griffs were down to just one catcher; this season they will have three. Sophomore Stephanie Pfentner is a rock behind the plate. She is another player who makes it look so easy, but defensively she is immensely talented. I lost count last season how many times she ended threats by throwing out a runner. She rarely commits an error, and this fall was no different. The problem last year was that she was forced to play every single inning behind the plate. She needs time at the designated player position, and freshman Sonia Aguilar will provide that for her. Sonia hit the ball very well this fall, including a long homer. Defensively she is very poised behind the plate. I think she will be seeing a lot of playing time this season. Redshirt freshman Marissa Miller did not play at all this fall, leading me to believe she is still recovering from rotator cuff surgery. I did notice her warming up pitchers occasionally. But thus far, she has not seen any regular season action.

Freshmen Corinne Schaus and Erica Afanador were used primarily as pinch runners this fall. Erica did have a start at second base, and performed well. Corinne pitched only one inning all fall, the last inning of fall ball. It looks like she may have to wait her turn. But of course, she must be prepared because who thought Jen Consaul would pitch so much last season. Erica's natural position is shortstop, but Katie Lancellotti has played every inning of every game during her career (with the exception of her very first game when Coach Rappl inexplicably started Lizzy Gatto at short), so she will also have to wait her turn. But I see her being used extensively in a pinch running role.

Now the weather turns bad, which we must go through to get to the spring season. I look forward to the 2012 season and am curious to see how Canisius will perform in the role of MAAC underdog. The Iona Gaels will attempt to become only the second team in conference history to win three titles in a row. The only team to do it? You know who!

Griffs To Open Season At East Carolina

It looks like Coach Rappl has assembled a very challenging schedule of games for this season, beginning with an appearance at the Pirate Classic in Greenville, North Carolina on the campus of East Carolina. The tournament begins February 10, with the Griffs opening against the Drexel Dragons. They will play a pair of games against the host Pirates, the 2011 Conference USA Champions and winners of two NCAA Tournament games last season. Another opponent will be the ACC's Virgina Cavaliers.

The sun visited the Demske Saturday!

Pink umpires, visiting recruits, players "passing the helmet", an unusually sun drenched autumn afternoon and big hitting were all part of the final day of the Golden Griffins' 2011 fall season.

The big hitting part was the one element that we've seen before this fall as the Griffs handled Mercyhurst easily by a 10-0 score Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex. One player who particularly stood out was freshman Michelle DelPrince. Shelley has been steadily improving during fall ball, and today she exploded for three RBIs in a 3 for 3 performance. She creamed a pitch to the right center field fence in the first inning that resulted in an easy triple and two runs scored. She would go on to single home another run, but her most impressive at bat IMO was a simple late inning bunt. She used her great speed to make it an easy infield hit. But after using her legs, she used her head. Noticing that the Mercyhurst infield had fallen asleep, she took off for second base, without an instant's hesitation, and slid safely under the tag for a two base bunt! What I wrote about Michelle last year:

I'm very happy that the Griffs have signed Michelle, because as I noted last year she has a certain intangible quality about her. A very smart player with her head always in the game, and tough too.

If you've watched her carefully this fall season, you'll have noticed the learning curve. This is one smart player who I believe has played herself into a starting role.

Today's game ended with senior shortstop Katie Lancellotti making a fabulous play. Of course, she made it look easy when she ranged deep behind second base, snagging a hot grounder then instantly flipping it to Lauryn Chris for the force out. She's at the top of her game, and in fact the Griffs' infield is very solid this season. I thought Val Nappo was outstanding at first base, and I guess she's ready to settle in there for the next three seasons.

Canisius received outstanding pitching today, utilizing all four of their hurlers including freshman Corinne Schaus who made her debut in the circle. Caroline Main started, and was very sharp as she has been all fall. She looks 100% healthy, and I feel that she's going to have a big season. Amanda Baun and Jen Consaul both had no problem breezing through their time in the circle.

Lizzy Gatto hit a nice double down the line, and stole a base as well. Val Nappo got the scoring started with a hard single. Freshman Sonia Aguilar drove home a pair of runs, and again played very well behind the plate. Freshman Robin Kennery hit safely again, and walked. I think she's gotten hits in every game this fall. It's interesting that Coach Rappl never mentioned third base when he signed her, but now it's looking as if she may be there for four years. Lauren Falzone hit and stole, as she seems to do every game she plays now. Stephanie Pfentner is a rock behind the plate, and I believe the best defensive catcher in the MAAC. I still think that not having to catch every single inning is going to help her bat.

There was a pause during the game when Coach Rappl had Erica Afanador and Corinne Schaus go into the stands with helmets collecting donations for the fight against breast cancer. That's why the blues were in pinks! And finally, let's hear it for the Buffalo weather which came through after the last dreary weekend with a spectacular day for softball!

The Golden Griffins will close out their fall season Saturday when they host division 2 Mercyhurst at the Demske Sports Complex beginning at 1 pm. It will be a great day weather wise, with temps in the 70s and sunny skies.

The Lakers bring with them a lot of local players, including Shaina Bunker who is beginning her college career after starring at North Tonawanda. Another interesting freshman is Cherise Gunnell, the pitcher who had that fabulous run to the state championships with Falconer last spring. Other locals on the Mercyhurst roster: Julie Harmon (North Tonawanda); Megan Smith (Immaculata); Courtney Smith (Sweet Home); Andrea "Bean" Sauers (Iroquois ); and Amanda Walker (Roy-Hart). And of course, assistant coach Griffin is a Mercyhurst alum.

This will be the last on field competition for the Griffs until February 10.

Griffs To Play In USF Series in 2012

The Golden Griffins will make a return trip to the USF series of tournaments in 2012, held in Tampa and Clearwater, Florida, this time playing in two of them. On the weekend of March 9 they will play at the Under Armour Invitational with games scheduled against Toledo, East Tennessee State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Cleveland State and Long Island. After a weekday game at South Florida, the Griffs will participate in The Game Tournament, scheduled to meet Tennessee-Chattanooga, Maryland, Long Island, Bryant and Towson.

Canisius will open their season on the weekend of February 10 at the East Carolina Invitational. They will also make a trip down to Texas, and a return trip to the UMBC Classic. Opponents have yet to be announced.

Corrin Genovese Begins College Career

Williamsville North's Corrin Genovese began her college career when she played in a fall ball doubleheader for the Missouri Tigers this past Friday.

Corrin was at second base for both games, wins over Maple Wood CC (6-2), and N. Central Missouri (13-0). She did quite well at the plate, hitting 4 for 9, including a triple in her very first at bat. She also hit a double, and drove home a run. She scored twice as well.

We'll follow Corrin's career, hopefully all the way to the World Series!

Griffs Sweep Final Day At The Nan Harvey Classic

The Golden Griffins put up eight runs in each of their games on a hot sunny day in Amherst as the annual Nan Harvey Classic wrapped up.

Interesting couple of games by the Griffs Sunday. Caroline Main pitched a complete game shutout against St. Bonaventure, winning 8-0, and although I lost count, I believe she struck out about ten Bonnies. She looked very sharp, as she has all fall. St. Bonaventure had one minor threat in the game, with runners at first and second; but Caroline extinguished the threat when she struck out the next three batters. It's very good news for Canisius to have her healthy and in top form.

I don't have all the stats, but Lauren Falzone was on base constantly again today. By my count, she had five RBIs Sunday. Obviously the question of who will be Lauren Hope's successor at the top of the batting lineup has been settled. She also made a very nice catch in right field.

Again, Katie Lancellotti was superb today. She smashed a two run double to the center field fence against St. Bona, and added a pair of RBIs against Edinboro.

Special mention for freshman outfielder Michelle DelPrince, who had a fabulous day. She had a pair of hits against the Bonnies; she also stole another base showing great speed and sliding ability (her slides were the first thing I noticed about her a couple years ago). Michelle opened the 7th inning in the game against Edinboro with a booming triple. She then again used her speed to score on a suicide squeeze executed perfectly by Lauren Falzone.

About the second game comeback against Edinboro. The division 2 school was playing a good game, holding a 3-0 lead through five innings; but the Griffs really didn't look all that interested until they had an intense team huddle preceding the top of the 6th inning. They then exploded for eight runs! Senior Lizzy Gatto started the rally by smacking a double to left which scored Lauryn Chris. After Val Nappo (who drove home three runs today) reached base, Robin Kennery hit a double in the gap to tie the game up. What can you say? Robin has been playing out of her mind this fall, and this time it was no surprise that she delivered the clutch hit. The Griffs took the lead when Stephanie Pfentner laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt that scored Katie Lancellotti. Stephanie would single home another run in the 7th for icing on the cake.

Amanda Baun started the second game, allowing three runs (the third after she was relieved). Jen Consaul earned the win. We still have not seen freshman Corinne Schaus pitch this fall. The Griffs finished 2-2 at this tournament, and will be in action twice next weekend, Saturday in Niagara Falls against Monroe Community, then Sunday at UB.

Day One At The Nan Harvey Tournament

I've already texted the play-by-play, so here I'll just write my impressions of the day spent at the Audubon Complex in Amherst.

The Griffs lost a couple of one run fall ball contests, but they were interesting games. I pictured senior Katie Lancellotti in this post because she was simply awesome in the field and at the plate. She's clearly the best shortstop in the MAAC, and made play after play in the two games today. She made great plays look ordinary again. She even snagged a blistering grounder diving far to her left that I believe saved extra bases. She didn't have a prayer of throwing the runner out, but seemingly turned a double into an infield single. Katie had a lot of hits today, and a couple walks. It's difficult keeping track of stats at the NHT with no scoreboards, but she was on base frequently. Stole a base too.

Freshman Robin Kennery continued her great play, driving in both Canisius runs in the Niagara game. Some very good plays at third base too. Senior Lauren Falzone just keeps getting on base most of the time; she also stole a base with a great diving slide. She seems to have completely adapted to the lead off role. Lizzy Gatto finally got thrown out attempting to steal a base; the first time that's happened since the spring of 2010. Her streak when the games count remains intact though. It was Lizzy who started the Griffs' rally when they came back from a 5-0 deficit against Buffalo when she laid down a beauty of a bunt for a single. Stephanie Pfentner also contributed to that rally by sending a runner home with a single. Erica Afanador joined the rally, driving home a run in her first start. After a jittery first ever throw, she settled down and played very well at second base, making an excellent shoestring catch later in the game. Val Nappo brought the Griffs all the way back with an RBI single. Freshman Michelle DelPrince saw plenty of time in left field, and played well with a couple of hits.

Caroline Main pitched a complete game against Niagara, and generally did well, but was the victim of Ambur Farmer's speed. Jen Consaul started against Buffalo, and did get off to a tough start due to errors then some great bunting by the Bulls. Amanda Baun pitched in relief, and seemed to my untrained eyes to be mixing her pitches quite well, and was very effective. She gave up a run to the bat of the great Kris Waldron.

The above photo of Rick Lancellotti playing with a broken nose reminded me that his daughter Katie did the exact same thing. Katie broke her nose playing basketball at Clarence High, but delayed surgery so she wouldn't miss softball season!

Lauryn Chris played a fine all around game

The Golden Griffins continued their hot hitting with a 14-4 win over Durham College in a rare night game at the Demske Sports Complex Saturday.

Canisius continued their fall season where they left off last week, with double figure hits and runs. The Griffs jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead, and never looked back against a quality Canadian college team. Let's begin with freshman Robin Kennery, who seemingly has solidified a lock on the third base position vacated by Paige Freiberger. Robin's play this fall has been nothing short of spectacular. Tonight she drove home 5 runs, thanks largely to a pair of hard hit, long doubles (one of them a ground rule hit). Robin has a great swing, smacks the ball hard, and runs very well. She was stellar in the field again; and made a great catch in foul territory.

Coach Rappl has a problem (when Katie Medina is once again healthy). He must get Lauryn Chris on the field this coming spring season. The smooth fielding senior was once again outstanding at second base, making numerous good plays, including a double play with shortstop Katie Lancellotti. She also made a great catch in shallow right field, snagging the ball over her shoulder. At the plate, she contributed a couple of singles, using her great speed to beat out an infield roller. She drove home a run, and scored once. Got to have the senior in the lineup in 2012.

Another senior, Katie Lancellotti, is so smooth that it's sometimes difficult to recognize that she's making great plays at short. The Griffs' defensive anchor retired a lot of batters tonight, including a lead runner at second base with a quick decision. At bat, she just missed a homer, hitting the center field fence and settling for a two bagger. She also stole third base, and scored a run.

The senior class is definitely gearing up for a good season. New lead off hitter Lauren Falzone continues to use her bat and speed to frequently get on base. She had three hits I believe, including a long double that drove home a run. She's proved that her flirtation with .400 last season was no fluke.

Sophomore Val Nappo always seems to hit the ball hard, and tonight was no exception. She stepped into a bases loaded situation in this game, and drilled a double to center field that cleared the bases.

Freshman Michelle DelPrince had herself a good showing tonight, playing in center field for Lizzy Gatto. Lizzy took the night off and was seen with her upper leg wrapped. She didn't seem to be in much discomfort, so perhaps it was just a pulled muscle. Michelle filled in well, with a couple hits, a run, and one batted in. She used a great deal of speed to beat out an infield hit, and scored the game's first run.

Newcomer Sonia Aguilar continues to impress. She platooned with Stephanie Pfentner as catcher/designated player, which looks to be a regular occurrence this coming spring. Sonia hit a pair of solid singles tonight; she also hit one pitch a ton---unfortunately it went foul. She was again very good behind the plate; calm and steady. Stephanie will not have the pressure of having to catch every single inning this season.

Chloe Contreras was again given time in the outfield, where she made a diving attempt at a fly ball, just missing. Corinne Schaus and Erica Afanador saw their first game action in a Canisius uniform. They both were used as pinch runners; Corinne scored a run, while Erica just missed a stolen base.

Senior Caroline Main started this game for the Griffs, pitching three great innings. She struck out seven batters in that time, giving up a pair of harmless singles. At one point she struck out five in a row; she looked very sharp.

Amanda Baun pitched the next three innings, and did struggle a bit, although she finished with three strikeouts. She still seems to have some control issues; it's something she'll have to work through as the spring season approaches.

Jen Consaul pitched the final three innings (of a scheduled 9 inning game), holding the Lords scoreless. When she wasn't pitching, Jen was playing at first base. She hit the ball hard again tonight, including a whistling line drive right at the shortstop.

Redshirt freshman Marissa Miller did not play again tonight. She was in uniform, but may still be recovering from rotator cuff surgery. And of course Katie Medina is still out, and had her knee iced. Presumably she will be kept off the field until the spring.

This season's edition of the Griffs looks to be a hot hitting team; well balanced also.
Next weekend it's the annual Nan Harvey Tournament, and a look at the other local schools.

The Canisius fall softball schedule keeps changing like the wind this year.
The Griffs will now host Durham College Saturday the 17th at 6 pm.

The Durham Lords are a top notch "fastball" program out of Canada, and they should provide the Griffs with some very good competition.

Former Griff Mallory Aldred was an assistant coach there last season, but I do not see her on the Lords' website this year.

On a sunny September afternoon in Buffalo, Coach Rappl began the new season with a request of the spectators to observe a minute of silence in remembrance of the ten year anniversary of 9/11. The flag was waving at half staff as Coach reminded us how fortunate we are to be able to enjoy such things as college softball.

The first thing noticeable this first day of fall ball was Katie Medina in street clothes, with her knee wrapped up. Apparently she is recovering from off season surgery; likely she will not be playing this fall.

The Griffs smacked the ball around a lot today, led by Jen Consaul who hit a pair of screaming line drives over the center field fence. Jen had a great afternoon. She started the game in the circle, and pitched three solid innings, allowing only one run off of a few dinky infield hits. She spent a good deal of time playing first base after her pitching duties were ended, making a great play on a bunt. She was really hitting the ball hard during her plate appearances. So suddenly, Jen is a multi faceted threat. This is a player who to me seems to be improving each game she plays.

Sophomore Val Nappo was another Griff who was hitting the ball awfully hard today, knocking home the first Canisius run with a long double. She also nearly decapitated an infielder with a booming line drive! Val started the game at first base, then was moved to the outfield.

Senior Lauren Falzone looked sharp, and picked up where she left off last season by getting on base often, including beating out an infield hit. Lauren was used as the lead off batter today. Also sharp was senior Lizzy Gatto, who still has not been picked off stealing a base since sometime in the spring of 2010.

Of course, we want to focus on the freshmen in their first taste of game action. It looked like Corinne Schaus was not scheduled to pitch today; we'll probably see her in the Nan Harvey Tournament. Neither did Erica Afanador see any action as of yet. Michelle DelPrince saw some time in the outfield, and narrowly missed making a great diving catch.

What do I know? I thought Sonia Aguilar would be seeing extensive action at third base---wrong. Where she did play was behind the plate, and she played very well. She tagged out a runner attempting to score, and did so after this runner cleverly avoided the first tag; Sonia calmly swept her arm around and got her with the second attempt. Sonia gave the crowd a thrill at the plate too by hitting a towering homer over the left center field fence. A no doubter. I think we'll be seeing more of those.

The eye opener to me was the outstanding play of freshman Robin Kennery---at third base. Coach Rappl had her playing there the whole game (which was a scheduled 9 inning game), and she did a great job. I was surprised to see her there, but I'm not the winningest coach in Canisius history, so she's there for a good reason. She resembled Paige out there, who BTW, was at the game. She had one bad throw, but shook it off and made many fine plays. She was good at the bat also, getting a couple hits and running very well.

Junior Amanda Baun made an appearance in the circle, and did have some control problems, but got out of a bases loaded inning with a strikeout. Senior Caroline Main pitched very well, allowing only a hit over four innings---she looks completely recovered. Let's hope so, because the Griffs will need her at full strength to make a championship bid in 2012.

Senior Lauryn Chris played the whole game at second base, and made a great diving attempt at a foul ball, coming out of nowhere. Stephanie Pfentner was solid behind the plate (as usual), and Chloe Contreras saw a lot of time in the outfield, left and right; she hit a very hard line drive in this game, unfortunately it was aimed right at the outfielder's glove. Katie Lancellotti was again outstanding at shortstop, coming off a season in which she committed only one error.

It was a good start for the Griffs, who pounded out some 16 hits. I see that next week's scheduled game against a different Brampton team was canceled, so the Griffs will next be in action at the Nan Harvey Tournament on the weekend of the 24th.
